To put it simply, with the new Studio Response Technology (SRT) system in place, the APX1200 sounds like a well miked acoustic guitar in a top studio. Once the pickup's mic modelling is activated, gone is the normal electro-acoustic sound and the guitar sings an uncanny naturalness and warmth in all frequencies. The APX1200 features Yamaha’s new System 62 preamp, powered by two AA batteries, which offers three-band EQ on mini rotary knobs, a three position switch for the microphone models and a Focus/Widepush button for the close/distance option. There is a Resonance control which as claimed dials in an even more realistic tone, and a five-band AFR (Auto Feedback Reduction) push button.
It’s a visual stunner, and obviously a top-of-the-range instrument. The mahogany binding and the colour of the neck really give it some class. Acoustically, the volume is impressive– usually electros carrying heavy electronics suffer terribly in this area and only come to life when plugged in. Not so with this guitar, it rings out loud and clear. All in all, this guitar has raised the bar for all acoustic electric guitars out there.
